Who ever thought pigs could teach kids manners

Author Kathryn Madeline Allen and illustrator Nancy Wolff created an original, colorful, hilarious picture book for children that does just that uses pigs to teach young children manners. “This Little Piggy's Book of Manners” unlike many ‘manners books’ shows bad manners and good manners in a delightful way using pigs as characters doing all the things you would normally expect people to do.

The bold bright colors match perfectly with the text relays to children in rhyming fashion that follows the ‘This little piggy went to’ children’s poem only the words and pictures are of ‘Little Piggy’ does and don’ts of etiquette. Even though “This Little Piggy's Book of Manners” is recommended for baby to pre-school aged children even older children will get plenty of laughs while at the same time getting a little reminder of good and bad manners.

"This little piggy said 'please' and 'thank you.'
This little piggy did not.
This little piggy closed his mouth while he ate.
This little piggy forgot.   Oops!”

Too often these days we see children who have obviously not been taught proper manners and it seems to show particularly when they hit the teen years. I think every home with ‘children’ of any age should have “This Little Piggy's Book of Manners” in their home library. If someone (baby to adult) forgets their manners just pull out this book as a little reminder. You may be surprised to see even teenagers breaking it out when their friends use bad manners.

Kathryn Madeline Allen is another Michigan author (from Bloomfield Hills, Michigan) two other books by Allen are “One Little Bench” another picture book and “Summer Vacation” short stories.
In the Lansing/Jackson area you can find “This Little Piggy's Book of Manners” at the Foster, Haslett, Holt, South Lansing and Stockbridge branches of the Capital Area District Library, and the Carnegie and Grass Lake branches of the Jackson District Library. To add “This Little Piggy's Book of Manners” to your home library you can order it online at Amazon.com.

I don’t know about you but I for one am willing to do anything possible to at least attempt to teach children good manners. But then I am the one who has kicked my 6 foot plus tall son in the behind when he forgot to hold a door open for a lady. Maybe old fashioned but please/thank you, eating with your mouth closed, and holding doors open will never go out of style in my house.

Each short story is color coded so two each read certain parts of the story and then some parts they read together. To add to the fun of taking turns reading the stories are based on Mother Goose rhymes but with a modern twist such as based on Old Mother Hubbard a woman and her dog decide it’s too cold to go out so they decide to order-in.
